Everyone Needs a Day Off

Everyone Needs a Day Off

Now I don't know about you, but when I hear the words "day off" in the middle of my training regimen, I get a wee bit antsy.  it is so hard to take a day completely off, knowing that you are in the midst of training for your event.   But I will say this, I KNOW it is necessary & beneficial to any training to have a recovery/rest day.  There is no way your body can train hardcore for 7 days a week non stop.  It will soon breakdown or force you to take time off via an injury.  Not the type of time off you would hope for.

I find it difficult to say I am not going to do anything for an entire day, but that's why I find activities that will benefit my training as well as give my body a much needed rest.  Here are some great examples of off day activites you can take on while training for your next run.

Swimming: Swimming is a great supplemental actvity to your run program.  Not only is it great cardio, it also uses those muscles that you don't normally work on during your runs.  This in turn gives your legs a rest, but helps work on those auxillary muscles you need in your training.  A lot of shoulder work, arms, and core work is done in the pool and it is all low impact.  If you have any issues with shoulder ROM, swimming can be a great way to open them up and improve your strides.

Stretching:  Though this should be done everyday, it is a great thing to focus on for your days off.  It should be the time you get a few stretching sessions in during the day, focusing on static, dynamic, and PNF techniques if you have someone who is knowledgeable to help you out.  Stretching is almost as important as your scheduled runs in improving your race outcome.

Rock climbing: Rock climbing has become more and more popular ove the past 6 years or so and it is a great way to build your upper body strength and get in a good workout.  Though you can go outside, I prefer the indoor option because it is easier to access.  Though you are using your entire body, it is using muscles you use during your runs, just in different ways & directions.  Great supplement to your runs!

So the next time you need to take a day off, remember, take it easy but don't limit yourself to doing nothing for the day.
