USPF NorCal Powerlifting Event

On Saturday December 12th, I participated in my first powerlifting event in Sacramento, CA.  It was a learning experience, a fun filled day of lifting, and it ended with success!
It began with my squat attempts.  I began with a manageable weight of 220lb and hit it!  2nd attempt, 231.1….miss.  The spotters jumped in I think a little early, but safety first right?  3rd attempt, same weight, HIT!  New PR for my squat!  I had the heaviest weight of all women in the competition.
Next up, bench press.  The weakest of my three lifts, I was a little concerned with reaching a good weight BUT I decided to shoot for the moon.  Started off with 126.5lbs and hit it.  next attempt of 132 was a little below my best but I missed it.  Tried to go for a 137.5 on the next one, figuring it would give me a new PR, but missed it.  Not a big deal, something to work on for the next one.

The last and my FAVORITE lift, the deadlift, was last.  This was my strongpoint and I was confident about busting it out!  The closest competitor to me opened with a lower weight, which put me in a great place.  257, HIT!  272, HIT!  I went all out on the last one shooting for 290lbs, my heaviest attempt yet.  Got it off the floor, to the knees, bar still moving…….dropped it.  I now feel like I CAN lift the weight and I WILL do it.
I loved the chance to compete and after the nerves settled it was smooth sailing.  My advice is be prepared for a LONG day of lifting with long rests between.  The hardest part is staying full and keeping the nutrients flowing in the body over the 8 hour day.  Make sure you eat, make sure you drink, make sure you rest, and GO FOR IT!!  I did and it paid off!
